Canon Ef 50 mm F1.8 MkII Example

The EF 50 f1.8 MkII is the cheapest of the Canon lenses, yet image quality is very high, giving this little gem probably the best quality/price ratio.

I often use this lens in low light, but sometimes it's difficult to focus in such conditions. The lens doesn't come with a distance scale, so I decided to draw one by myself.

If you want one:

1) Save the image below, print it, and cut it out. It should be 85 x 24 mm more or less (300 dpi)

2) Set the 50 mm on Manual Focus, and focus at the minimum distance; then place a mark (white preferably) on the focus ring, wherever you want. It should be helpful to place it somewhere near the little flower of "macro" setting.

3) Paste the label on the barrel, the 0.45m mark must coincide with the ring mark (see example). Since the stripe size is 84 x 24, it could be placed even on the upper place of the barrel, close to the focus ring. I prefer the position shown in the photo above because it is less exposed this way.

4) Enjoy it. It wouldn't have 100% accuracy but I find it useful in many situations.
